Technical Services

The department is responsible for the safe and efficient movements of vehicles and pedestrians throughout the City of Enid. This department advises and assists other departments on traffic and technical issues. Systems include signalized intersections, school lights, networking, mobile communications, and microwave communications.

The City currently has 50 signalized intersections 32 of which are equipped with battery systems which will allow them to run for up to 6 hours during power outages. There are also 35 intersections within the City that have video detection systems. Staff is responsible for HVAC as well as building maintenance in all City facilities along with plumbing and electrical problems that arise.

Traffic Division 

The Traffic division is responsible for the installation and maintenance of approximately 40,000 traffic control devices. This includes the preparation of drawings, standards and specifications, determination and layout of parking restrictions, design and placement of pavement markings, traffic signs and traffic control devices. Traffic Control maintains, installs, repairs, programs and calibrates all electronically controlled signal systems throughout the City. These systems include 50 signalized intersections,36 school lights and central business district streetlights. Other duties include creating, installing and repairing all regulatory, warning, direction and information signs, coordinating painting of 200 lane miles and street markings, traffic control plans. The department advises and assists other departments in traffic and technical issues.

Signs

The Traffic Division is responsible for the manufacturing, repair, and maintenance of approximately 40,000 signs and posts throughout the City.

  • Signs are designed according to MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standard. Signs can be printed or cut out of various vinyl or reflective sheeting materials.
  • Once the sign is designed and printed out. It is then laminated onto the appropriate sign blank. It is then ready to be installed.

Signal Lights

The Traffic Division maintains, repairs, and programs 50 signalized intersections. The Traffic Division is working towards new technological advances in the signal lights. There are 35 intersections with video detection systems, 50 intersections with battery backup systems, and all the intersections have LED lights in them. Traffic counts and traffic studies are done to aid in the timing programs for the intersections. Also included in with the signal light area is the Central Business District street lights. Enid has approximately 173 decorative street lights in the Central Business District downtown area.

School Zone Beacons

The Traffic Division maintains 36 flashing school zone lights. 32 school lights are for Enid Public Schools, 2 are for Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Grade School, and 2 are for Chisolm School District. Each year the school zone lights are programmed for daily times and annual days off schedule. All the yellow lights are LED type to conserve on energy use. 2 of the school lights are solar powered.
