The City of Enid is excited to announce the dedication of a street in honor of one of its distinguished hometown athletes, Lydell Carr. The dedication event will take place on Friday, September 27, at 3:30 p.m. at 829 N Lydell Carr Drive, as part of the Class of 1984 reunion kick-off. A portion of North Johnson Street was renamed Lydell Carr Drive in 2023 to celebrate and recognize his outstanding contributions on the field as an Enid High School legend and his legacy as a hometown football hero. Born and raised in Enid, Carr’s accomplishments have made him a local hero. As a star player at Enid High School, Carr led the Plainsmen to a historic victory in the 1983 Class 5A state championship. His 163-yard rushing performance and two touchdowns helped secure a stunning 14-0 upset over the highly ranked Tulsa Washington, a game that remains one of the most memorable moments in Enid’s sports history. Carr’s skill and leadership earned him state and national honors, including being named the state’s Player of the Year and a high school All-American. Carr’s football journey extended beyond Enid. As a four-year starter for the University of Oklahoma Sooners, he was part of the 1985 national championship team and won four Big Eight titles. His professional career, though affected by injury, saw him play in both the NFL and the World League of American Football. Communications Director Derrick Silas said, “This street dedication not only celebrates his athletic achievements but also honors his character, humility, and lifelong connection to this city.” Speakers and other program participants will include: Mayor David Mason, Stacey Norwood, Danny Collums, and remarks by Lydell Carr
